Reading the article “See Through Words” by Michael Erard the first time took a lot of time to fully grasp and understand the concepts. Along with that, marking up the text and annotating it as best as I could also made the reading process longer. After having a full class discussion and answering some questions on the text, re-reading Erard’s article was much easier and allowed me to dive in deeper into the text. Doing this I found more evidence that supported his claims, as well as made my own connections with statements of his, whereas originally I did not. For example, in one part of Erard’s text, he said “Once we loose a metaphor into the world, it will be blocked by other ways of thinking that change its meaning or disrupt its interpretation”. This means that some metaphors die out along with the “birth” of new ideas and ways of doing things. He mentioned this because he wanted the readers to understand that metaphors need to be designed in such a way that they can be interpreted and live on through the years of new fads, generations of people, etc. This statement that I missed or didn’t connect to actually has a lot of relevance to his main point, and I wouldn’t have found this if I didn’t re-read the material.

Other than a few new things I found after reading it for the second time, I can conclude that there really wasn’t much I found the second time around that I didn’t find the first time. A word that I looked up because I didn’t understand is hewn (used as a verb). Hewn was shown in the text hiding in the very first sentence, and now that I know the definition it helps me better understand what he was talking about.

  1. I want to commend you on braving that first read–and the amount of time it can take as you try out a new skill/habit. I hope that you find your annotations pay off as you brainstorm, draft, and revise your first paper.
