In Jonah Lehrer’s “The Future of Science…Is Art”, he basically tries to convey that art should be intertwined with science, and vice versa. He wants to make clear that the two can help each other by achieving goals beyond our capabilities right now. He says, “If we want answers to our most essential questions, then we will need to bridge our cultural divide. By heeding the wisdom of the arts, science can gain the kinds of new insights and perspectives that are the seeds of scientific progress”.  His main argument is why separate the two, when they can help each other out. Doing this can help physicists, neuroscientists, psychologists, etc.

The bridging principle: connecting two ideas to form reason/solutions, and draw out new methods (ex. the neural event that would explain how the activity of our brain cells  creates the subjective experience of consciousness)

Holistic perspective: to look at something as a whole, instead of pieces, taking everything into account

Epiphenomenon: “a secondary effect or byproduct that arises from but does not causally influence a process.” (Oxford dictionary)

  1. Great! Make sure that you are clear on how Lehrer envisions this comingling between the arts and science.
