Pinker with Lehrer:

When it comes to the sciences, it is hard to not “see” it in almost everything we do. Science is all around us, and it brings up the question of whether or not it affects our every day life. In Jonah Lehrer’s “The Future of Science…is Art?”, he explains in in his essay that science is in the arts/should be in the arts more. His main idea of a portion of his essay is pretty much that science is already all around us, so why not incorporate it into the arts too? With this, Lehrer  makes the point that science is in all outlets, quoting John Brockman saying, “What traditionally has been called ‘science’ has today become ‘public culture’…Science is the only news.” This quotation is saying that science is very integrated to our lives that at this point any news or knowledge exposed to us is simply science unmasked. In In Steven Pinker’s “Science Is Not Your Enemy”, he has a similar view to what Lehrer said, saying, “In other words, the worldview that guides the moral and spiritual values of an educated person today is the worldview given to us by science.” Pinker is saying that our values are heavily swayed by the knowledge given to us by science. Both Pinker and Lehrer are conveying that with the integration  of science in different aspects of our life, including news outlets, it is affecting how we see the world, therefore affecting our values and our every day life.

Pinker with Self-to-Text:

I believe that in a world with an infinite amount of mystery and a tiny portion of what’s actually been uncovered, and discovered by scientists, it is our duty to use that knowledge to its greatest potential. In Pinkers essay he wrote, “The facts of science, by exposing the absence of purpose in the laws governing the universe, force us to take responsibility for the welfare of ourselves, our species, and our planet.” He is saying that with the knowledge disposed to us we have a responsibility to use it in order to better our lives and others.

  1. Your first paragraph’s organization looks great. Your claim sentence is strong and clear. You do a good job connecting the quotes. I want to encourage you to revisit Lehrer, however. I’m not sure if your summary is accurate.

Your second paragraph is missing the second bit of “evidence” that exists inside a Barclay paragraph. What if you connected this quote to a brief discussion of global warming? I could see you easily analyzing this connection and how it deepens your paragraph’s claim.
