The chapter that I chose was chapter seven, whose title was “So What? Who Cares?”–Saying Why It Matters. The chapter pretty much just tried to convey that you need to back up your claim. You can state your opinion, but people won’t care/cant take it seriously until you further explain the “so what” and “who cares” aspects of it. It’s all about addressing your intended audience, and taking them on a journey through your explanation. This chapter offers templates and ideas on how to accomplish these goals in your paper. I chose to read this chapter in particular because I feel that in a very opinionated essay it is important you back up those opinions. Sure, I can say “Narrative has an impact on our identities”, but why? I wanted to delve in further on how to approach backing up these opinions, and see if I was on the right track. Going through my paper, I proceeded to offer more explanations, and more back-up sentences to further some of my arguments. Doing so, I feel that it made my paper more clear and almost more reliable. It shows that I know my “stuff” and it offers more intel than if I were to briefly explain. Not only that. but it makes my audience more invested in what I have to say, possibly even convincing them, if they were on the opposing end.
