Reflection on NL Modules 3 & 4

Module 3: Knowledge and Clinical Judgement

In this module I learned about different nursing procedures, learning styles, learning strategies, clinical reasoning, clinical judgement and more. Nursing procedures taught me that it is used guided by evidence based literature, and that the procedures are put in place to provide overall safe and high quality care. Some learning styles that were discussed in this module were visual learning, tactile learning and auditory learning. I feel that learning styles and getting to know which one works for you best can have a big impact on how you’re going to succeed in your career. Clinical reasoning and clinical judgement discussed how as nurses we have to analyze situations in order to make proper decisions. I will definitely need these tools in the hospital as everything is fast paced and pertinent to make the right call based on your interpretation, analysis and evaluation of the situation.

Module 4: Priority Setting Frameworks

In this module I learned many important assessments that nurses need to know how to prioritize. This includes Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the nursing process, ABC’s, and survival potential. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is based on 6 needs of a patient that go from most important to least. The nursing process is a tool used for nurses to have a step by step building block on to treat their patient. First they assess, then diagnose, plan, implement the plan, and lastly evaluate how the plan went. Another thing that I learned from this module is how to assess what is most important to focus on when I have a patient who has a lot of trauma. This is called the ABC’s or Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Lastly, I learned about survival potential. This is the clients chance for survival in a mass casualty event, and how as the nurse who you want to assess first. This includes emergent, urgent, nonurgent and expectant. All of these priority frameworks that I learned about in this module will help me as a nurse become aware of the most important things to do first. This can be essential for life or death of a patient so it is important that I understand and get familiar with all of these priority assessments.
